As you can see from my attached video below I am super excited at the introduction of new single serve technology from ZIPZ (zipzwine.com) When I saw the packaging and concept I was SOLD!!! Combine that with the fact that the packaging has been married with one of Zachys hottest selling line of California wines (FETZER Crimson & Quartz) and it is a SLAM DUNK.
Zachys consults for a few large hospitality providers on their wine programs…Most notably CENTERPLATE (centerplate.com) who has sports facilities, convention centers and entertainment venues nationwide. In addition, we work closely with the NY METS at CitiField and we have learned that there was a huge need to find a way to get premium wine into a single serve…easy to travel package.
PROBLEM SOLVED!
Zachys is one of the very first retailers in America with this new line of wines which just launched on April 1st. To get the message out we felt that it best to offer *FREE GROUND SHIPPING on all orders placed with us for Fetzer Crimson Red ZIPZ 2010 & Fetzer Quartz White ZIPZ 2011 between now and April 15th.
Simply, mention this promo if calling or emailing the store and if placing orders online write “ZIPZ PROMO” in the special instructions box and we will remove your shipping charge.
Watch the video because these wines are fun and easy and are a great solution to WINE-On-The-Go!!
All my best,
Andrew

With the big day approaching this weekend (Super bowl Sunday) we thought today was the perfect day to swap out the complimentary wines in the ENOMATIC TASTING CENTER. As I see it there are 3 types of Superbowl fans…
- Fans that are rooting for the AFC team
- Fans that are rooting for the NFC team
- Fans who are just watching for the commercials and watching the halftime show
Whatever your reason for watching we felt it would be a cool weekend to do a taste-off in the ENO with affordable wines from two of our favorite regions, with each having a big “anchor” wine. (Our own Super winner if you will)
For this weekend’s tasting here is how we have lined up the teams and the wines:
The San Francisco 49ers: Represented with 8 delicious California selections featuring the 2009 Dominus
The Baltimore Ravens (Who crushed my Patriots L ): Represented with 8 of the hottest Italian wines in the store and 2009 Sassicaia as the “Wow” wine for obvious reasons, I am pulling for the Italian wines and by default the Ravens (My loyalty is to my region before my sports). Regardless of whether you are looking for value wines or the delicious anchors….we have a great lineup in the ENO that is definitely worth Taking The Drive.
All my best,
Andrew

…Going Beyond Cabernet & Chardonnay to Trousseau.
In this video I focus in on one of the small artisan wineries based in Sonoma that produces extremely limited production wines from across all of California. Nathan Roberts and Duncan Arnot Meyers of Arnot-Roberts not only produce amazing Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Chardonnay but they also are one of the leaders of experimenting with non-mainstream grapes like Trousseau.

The ink has not dried…and the printing presses are whirring at our printer in Pennsylvania, so we felt this would be the perfect time to get you all a “sneak peak” at the new Gazette long before it hits mail boxes. We spent a month working really hard to capture the best of the best of all the new-release wines hitting the market this Fall and presenting them to you at super sharp pricing.
Whether it’s 2009 Bordeaux, 2009/2010 Burgundies, 2010 Rhones, 2006/2007 Brunellos, hot new releases from Spain, California classics or premium spirits…This Fall Gazette has a little something for everyone.
I think that some of the deals are SO GOOD that a few of these offerings may very well be sold out before hitting peoples mail boxes.
Take the time to peruse this “sneak peak” as there is a lot of good reading.
All my best,
Andrew
“Organic” is a term in the produce world that you see popping up everywhere…but what does “Organic” mean to you?
Do you buy into a product just because it says it’s organic? And, more importantly, do things taste different (better…or possibly worse) when they are produced organically?
The wine world has been following the organic trend for the past 15 years, and in the last 5 or 6 many many producers are moving towards the trend of organics and biodynamics.
I had a client recently looking for a great value-based organic line of wines for a large function and the obvious choice for us were the wines of Bonterra. I had the chance to become re-acquainted with these wines this past Summer and was pleasantly surprised with the price/quality ratio they represent. A few days after the tasting, I read a great piece in Wine Enthusiast Magazine which highlights Bonterra’s organic efforts dating back to 1990: “Bonterra Vineyards Back To Its Roots.”
“Bonterra didn’t invent organic grape growing, it perfected it.” – Wine Enthusiast Magazine
It goes to reason that whenever you are starting with better ingredients (cleaner fruit) that you hope to get a more natural and pure product.
The only problem I have seen in the wine business today is that wineries/vineyards who have adapted and changed to organic farming have also carried a significant price tag to the wines.
So how do we get people into the category to create an understanding at a reasonable price point.
Today’s answer: Bonterra!!!
Through this video segment you have seen my overall impression of these organic wines and I think with the backing of their new parent company (The Concha y Toro group from Chile) these wines will have a VERY bright future in the marketplace.
All my best,
Andrew

I wanted to get you some thoughts from my most recent trip to California and thought this internal memo I sent to my staff upon touching down back in New York this weekend summed it up well:
The reason I just took this brief trip to Napa/Sonoma was for a few reasons…
- It has been a few years since we actively showed up to taste in Napa/Sonoma (Jeremy was there briefly in March) and it is so important to the Zachys brand that we be present in the important wine regions of the world so they can hear what our clients are looking for and what is currently working best at Zachys.
- I had been told that both 2010 and 2011 were difficult vintages due to rain and excessive heat. It is never more important to be there than with vintages like this. At the end of the day, the truly gifted vineyard managers and winemakers made the necessary decisions/choices to produce good wines in these vintages. It was my job to get a feel for who was successful and who was not.
- There is always unique purchasing opportunities for us that only come from spending some time out there, knocking on some doors and shaking a few trees to see what falls out
A few highlights of the trip for me where….
• Meeting a rockstar winemaker (Thomas Brown) who was a totally grounded guy and LOVES to drink old Barolo. Thomas is making the wines at Outpost and Schrader just to name a few.
• How do you avoid the issue of drinking and driving in Calistoga? Ride bikes of course!! It was a hoot riding beach crusers to and from dinner on Monday night with the wine bag over our shoulder. No crashes.
• Formerly connected with Aubert and Peter Michael…L’Angevin is making some sensational wines including their 2009 Chardonnays
• The ORIN SWIFT wine making team are INCREDIBLE entrepreneurs who have some big news about to hit the wine market in a new value brand they think is going to set the wine world on their ear.
• There will be a new BOOKSTER Cabernet in the market by Fall that we will be selling for $29.99 and it will totally over deliver.
• BOOKSTER Pinot Noir will be coming back this fall along with the new release (2010) of BOOKSTER Chardonnay
• I met a group of new-generation winemakers in West Sonoma that are truly passionate about making wines with European finesse and in many cases with European varietals. It was a BIG eye opener for me and there will be much to come on this in the next month or two. This group included Pax Mahle of WIND GAP and Duncan Meyers & Nate Roberts of ARNOT-ROBERTS who were both making GREAT wines!!!
• I was shocked at how much the winemaking generation out there today loves drinking old Barolo….maybe those California guys are not so bad after all!!
• While dining out I have found 4 or 5 very exciting new Italian wines that for one reason or another are only being imported on the West Coast….not for long….I am in the process of hunting them down.
• Finally, the 2012 growing season has gotten off to an INSANE start with many of the vineyards already 2+ weeks ahead of an average growing season and lots of smiles all around at the prospects for the vintage.
Stay tuned for a lot of exciting offers to come.
All my best,
Andrew

Bookster Cabernet Sauvignon
Finally the Bookster Cabernet Sauvignon is BACK. It has not been since the 2006 Vintage that we have had the Bookster Cabernet Sauvignon back in the shop.
Today is the launch of the New Bookster Cabernet Sauvignon 2009! With a new look, a tremendous vintage (2009) and an exceptional new pedigree.
| Regular Bottle: | $55.00 | Sale Bottle: | $43.95 |
First things first: the Bookster Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% Napa Valley fruit sourced from some of the finest vineyards of Napa. Including the likes of Stagecoach, Beckstoffer To Kalon and Beckstoffer Dr. Crane. The winery and winemaking team behind this luxurious wine has asked to remain anonymous. What we can tell you is that this team has turned out exceptional “Cult” Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Blends vintage after vintage consistently garnering mid to high 90 point reviews from Robert Parker and now Antonio Galloni of the Wine Advocate. As we did use the term “Cult” – yes their labels sell for on average $125 to $150 per bottle upon release with many wines only being available via mailing list. To say there is an exceptional winemaker behind this team is an understatement. This young man has an outstanding track record and this project’s consultant is one of the biggest names in consulting today.
With a 94 point (Outstanding) overall score from the Wine Advocate team of Robert Parker and Antonio Galloni, 2009 is the perfect follow up to the land mark vintages of 2007 and 2005.
“The 2009 reds are gorgeous, beautifully balanced reds with silky tannins, radiant fruit and huge early appeal… The 2009s are intensely perfumed, mid-weight, gracious wines that will deliver considerable pleasure right out of the gate… Overall, I found 2009 to be a very consistent vintage in terms of the personality of the wines – certainly much more so than 2008 – both within producers’ ranges and also from wine to wine within specific portfolios.” Antonio Galloni the Wine Advocate 12/11
Putting all the pieces together-this 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon has one exceptional pedigree already and is a textbook example of the 2009 vintage. Rich, powerful, concentrated but enjoyable right out of the gate!
